SYNTHBIRDS COMMISSIONED BY OTAGO MUSEUM
Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Nic was flown down to Otago to restage the Synthbirds conceptual musical performance. Collaborating with a local Dunedin theremin player, the piece was performed using just two theremins this time. The theremins were positioned on balconies of buildings overlooking a park in central Dunedin. The performance took place in the early morning as commuters walked through the park and as deligates arrived at the museums science conference. Although ambient traffic noise was a concern initially, the piece worked really well in the smaller environment with noticeable improvements in bird synchronicity. “In future, I would like to perform the work again using scaff towers up amongst trees in a really large park or woodland. If the park was big enough, there could be two PAIRS of theremins quite a distance from each other”. If there is any interest in the Synthbirds playing at a public event, festival, or winary etc, please do contact nic mcgowan via this website.
