The charming old building – originally built as the Island Bay town hall – was previously owned by Wellington film company ‘Motion Pictures’. Nigel Hutchinson of Mopix made the acquisition not long after the runaway success of their film Goodbye Porkpie in the late seventies. For the subsequent thirty five years the studio has played a role in the Welly film industry. Movie biz has been the 100 year-old hall’s most successful iteration. The fully equipped 200sq meter film studio is hired out for professional film, television amp; photographic shoots, scenographic construction and digital composting work (green-screen/blue-screen). There is vehicle access to the studio and off-street parking available for key utility vehicles. The space is ideal for small film productions, music videos, movie pick-ups, SFX, corporate videos, TV work and stills photography.
Sound dampening design is provided on the walls and a number of elements such as drapes and carpet floor-tiles are available to ensure good quality sound capture. There are no commercial flight paths overhead and traffic noise interference is low.
On-site facilities include kitchen/greenroom/espresso machine, toilet/shower, makeup and wardrobe, and workshop. There is on-site telephone, fax and wireless internet. Additional phone jack/line can be activated for private production use. There is a dairy and pie shop virtually next door and a good cafe just a block away. The beach is five minute’s walk down the road for crew or cast with spare time.
